#31: what are they trying to say?

So I was in a shoe store on Saturday evening when I overheard the following conversation between two guys.

"We should have brought a gay guy with us. Like my hairdresser. They have good taste and they'd be able to pick out stuff for us."

At the point I walked past them when the very same guy proceeded to ask me:

"Excuse me, which of these do you prefer?"

The other guy mumbled something I didn't hear and he chose to respond with:

"What? Look at his shoes, he has good taste."

I lazily looked at both pairs and then chose one.

So what exactly happened here? Did I:
a) appear to be gay
b) appear straight but seemed to have good taste

LOL.

LOL. Who cares.. you clearly got noted as having good taste.

I'll reserve judgement until I get to see you in person.

Probably, you appear to be gay.

How can I know? I don't, for sure.

But many of us think we are incognito, while our true identity is obvious to others.
