#35: 3pm weekends

Over the past year or so I've picked up a very nasty habit of sleeping in on Saturdays and Sundays and by sleeping in I don't mean till 10 or 11. We're talking about until 2 or 3pm (or sometimes even 4).

One evening a few months ago back when I was still in NYC I was amazed when a friend called me at 5pm and I realized that I slept the entire day away.

Now getting up around 2 or 3pm isn't a big deal during the summer because there's generally still going to be 6-7 hours of sunlight left in the day. During winter however, this is a completely different story. Getting up at 3pm means 1.5 hours of sunlight and by the time I get up, shower and get dressed half of that time is gone.

This probably didn't matter much in New York, a city I knew pretty well and had gotten used to but coming to a brand new city and sleeping in till 2 or 3, having very little hours of sunlight left is a very bad idea because:
  1. I don't actually know the city so trying to navigate at night in an unfamiliar area can be weird and downright scary if you end up in the wrong places.
  2. I won't get much of a chance to take those corny tourist photos we all know and love and upload them to Facebook.
  3. If I don't scope out the gayborhood during the day, how am I to know where to go come 11pm at night?
  4. Things have a habit of closing early on weekends here such as supermarkets which are only open until 5pm on Sundays.
Now part of the reason I tend to sleep away most of the weekend is also no doubt due to my late night activities. I'm a night owl and even if I happen to stay in, will probably still be up online or watching tv. If I go out, then that's another reason to sleep in.

With my 4 month stint in the UK quickly counting down (it's already the end of week 2 of 16) I need to truly experience all this city have to offer during the night AND day.

so true. late fall/winter was rough when i lived there a few years ago. and the sun never gets very high at all!

luckily it is a pretty safe place all around central london, and soho is ALWAYS festive once the sun sets!

I am the exact same way. I am a complete night owl and have many a time woke up at 6-7pm. When this happens you get into a pattern of staying awake all night and sleeping all day which can be very hard to get out of.

I lived in London for three months (quite some time ago) and people kept asking me if I'd been to this, that or the other locations outside of London.

I kept saying, I haven't seen all of London yet! I can't start going off to Paris or Ireland!

The second to last weekend I was in town I made it Brighton, and my last weekend I went to Cornwall. I wished I'd gone sooner.

Give yourself a once a month "out of town" holiday. See more than just London. Flights on low cost airlines can get you almost anywhere in Europe or Great Britain. Pack light, that's how they gouge you after you've bought your ticket.
